• A small hand plumbing snake for both toilet and sink drains (drain auger): For Sink- can be purchased at dollar store For Toilet- Can be purchased at RONA
• Sink and tub drain catchers: Can be purchased at dollar store
• Replacement light bulbs
• Range hood filter (if applicable)- Can be found at places like RONA
Keeping these basic items available can prevent minor issues from becoming larger repairs.
• Do not flush wipes, paper towels, feminine hygiene products, or excessive toilet paper.
• Avoid pouring grease, oils, coffee grounds, or food debris down sinks.
• Use drain catchers in tubs and sinks to prevent hair buildup.
• Clear minor clogs promptly using appropriate tools.
* If toilet is overfilling, be sure to turn off the water by twisting the shut off valve next to the back of the toilet.
Proper ventilation helps prevent mould growth and moisture damage.
Residents should:
• Use bathroom fans during and after showers (minimum 20–30 minutes). Always use a shower curtain and wipe up wet floors promptly.
• Use kitchen fans when cooking. This also minimizes hallway odours.
• Wipe condensation from windows during colder months.
• Keep air circulating in rooms, especially in winter. If humidity seems to be an issue for your family, consider investing in a dehumidifyer.
• Avoid blocking baseboard heaters or vents.
At the first sign of surface mildew or condensation buildup, clean promptly using appropriate household cleaners. Do not use bleach as it feeds mould.Â
During colder months:
• Open blinds periodically to allow airflow.
• Avoid drying clothes inside the unit without ventilation.
• Keep furniture slightly away from exterior walls and away from the front of windows.
• Wipe window tracks and frames if moisture collects.
• Clean stove elements regularly to avoid buildup. Glass stoves require a gentle scraper and ceramic stove top cleaner.
• Avoid overloading dishwashers. Clean filter regularly.Â
• Vacuum regularly and do not let water sit on floors. When mopping vinyl flooring, take care not to use too much water or harsh chemicals.
• Be sure to attend to carpet spills promptly and do not let water soak into the underlay. Water not being absorbed properly may cause mould issues.Â
